My new Taki’s Magazine column:

Arguing With the Inarguable

Steve Sailer

August 04, 2021

The Olympics are a festival of human biodiversity.

Different sports are best-suited to different body types: For example, swimmer Michael Phelps, winner of 23 gold medals, and eight-time gold-medalist sprinter Usain Bolt are roughly the same height, but Phelps has a long torso, like a human surfboard, while Bolt has long legs.

In turn, because humans evolved to have somewhat different body types in different parts of the world, that means that different racial groups have different athletic strengths and weaknesses, as you can see on NBC this week.

Granted, most whites aren’t physically much like Phelps and most blacks aren’t much like Bolt. But on average, whites are a little more long-torsoed and blacks are a little more long-legged. So, it’s not surprising that the greatest-ever swimmer is white and the greatest-ever sprinter is black.

And yet, according to America’s current conventional wisdom, as espoused by Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, all this can’t be true. Instead, evidence of superiority or inferiority in anything can only be the result of racist policy.

Although Kendi has been omnipresent in the media, as far as I can tell nobody has ever asked him about sports. The obvious racial gaps in various sports just never come up.

The most inarguable race differences can be seen in the simplest, most instinctual sport: running. All children naturally race to see who is fastest.

Read the whole thing there.

It’s time for my August iSteve fundraiser. I hold three fundraisers annually: April, August, and December.

Large or small, I find each donation to be a personal message of encouragement to keep doing what I’m doing. I more or less figured out the basic logic of the 21st Century, which hasn’t made me popular, but with your support I can keep on keeping on pointing out how the world works.

Here are eight ways for you to contribute:

First: Most banks now allow fee-free money transfers via Zelle.

Zelle is really a good system: easy to use and the fees are nonexistent, unlike, say, Paypal.

I’ve moved Zelle up to number one rather than Paypal because Zelle does not charge a 2.9% fee 3.49% fee like Paypal does lately.

You guys in the Paypal Mafia are great, but you’ve made enough money off me and my readers. (Cravenly: Readers, please feel free to send me money via Paypal if you feel like that would be most convenient for you: 96.51% is great!)

If you have a Wells Fargo bank account, you can transfer money to me (with no fees) via Wells Fargo SurePay/Zelle. Just tell WF SurePay/Zelle to send the money to my ancient AOL email address steveslrAT aol.com — replace the AT with the usual @). (Non-tax deductible.) Please note, there is no 2.9% fee like with Paypal or Google Wallet, so this is good for large contributions.

Second: if you have a Chase bank account (or even other bank accounts), you can transfer money to me (with no fees) via Chase QuickPay/Zelle (FAQ). Just tell Chase QuickPay/Zelle to send the money to my ancient AOL email address (steveslrATaol.com — replace the AT with the usual @). If Chase asks for the name on my account, it’s StevenSailer with an n at the end of Steven. (Non-tax deductible.) There is no 2.9% fee like with Paypal or Google Wallet, so this is also good for large contributions.

Third, Zelle might work with other banks too. Here’s a Zelle link for CitiBank. And Bank of America.

Fourth: You can use Paypal (non-tax deductible) by going to the page on my old blog here. Paypal accepts most credit cards. Contributions can be either one-time only, monthly, or annual. (Monthly is nice.)

Fifth: You can mail a non-tax deductible donation to:

Steve Sailer
P.O Box 4142
Valley Village, CA 91617

Sixth: You can make a tax deductible contribution via VDARE by clicking here.

Please don’t forget to click my name at the VDARE site so the money goes to me: first, click on “Earmark your donation,” then click on “Steve Sailer:”

VDARE has been kiboshed from use of Paypal for being, I dunno, EVIL. But you can give via credit cards, Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin, check, money order, or stock.

Note: the VDARE site goes up and down on its own schedule, so if this link stops working, please let me know.

Seventh: send money via the Paypal-like Google Wallet to my Gmail address (that’s isteveslrATgmail .com — replace the AT with a @). (Non-tax deductible.)

Eight: You can use Bitcoin using Coinbase. Coinbase payments are not tax deductible. Below are links to two Coinbase pages of mine. This first is if you want to enter a U.S. dollar-denominated amount to pay me.

Pay With Bitcoin (denominated in U.S. Dollars)

This second is if you want to enter a Bitcoin-denominated amount. (Remember one Bitcoin is currently worth many U.S. dollars.)

Pay With Bitcoin (denominated in Bitcoins)

Ninth: At one reader’s request, I recently added Square as a fundraising medium, although I’m vague on how it works. If you want to use Square, send me an email telling me how much to send you an invoice for. Or, if you know an easier way for us to use Square, please let me know.

Thanks.

Sydney is attractive with what I consider almost a generic "ethnic" look.

What is generic "ethnic". It's what you see on TV and in movies.

One of the more striking examples being Sasha Lane. https://filmmakermagazine.com/people/sasha-lane/#.YQqwvS1h3dc

Although, I prefer the American Olympian sisters Jessica and Nellie Korda, Nellie being the current Rolex #1 ranked in the World.

I gotta say, I also like Lydia Ko, withy the Asian second wife look. OK.... I admit I like women's golfers based largely on hotness.

This being Japan/Olympics, what about Amerind Billy Mills? Jim Thorpe was a type, back in he day.

It's worth pointing out that elite athletes spend almost all their time around other elite athletes, especially in college. That would mean that most of their friends and friends of friends would be elite athletes, either at their school (Ashton Eaton's wife) or at another school (Sidney McLaughlin's boyfriend).

I'm guessing the pool of marriage prospects is even more limited than "other elite athletes." Lacrosse players probably don't spend time around women's sprinters.

Could there be a bit of heritability of preferences here? Most b/w mixes have black fathers and white mothers. Perhaps the daughters inherit preferences that black men are a better fit for, and the boys are inheriting their fathers’ preference for white women?

If you are right, this is a very interesting observation. Good job.

    , @R.G. Camara

It means that no matter how "accomplished" or light skinned a black woman is, if she appears black, her SMV is lower than any other group. However, among black men, she is highly prized, being both black (and therefore mama will approve) but also lighter skinned (thus allowing the black man to fantasize she is white). Thus how light-skinned "paper bag test" passing black chicks are the queen bees of the black social scene for the most part.

But black men who get some sort of fame will have that fame overcome racial obstacles to getting non-black women. Fame is a powerful aphrodisiac.

Isn't this related to the reason why the most racist people on Earth are Black women and Asian men? For both sexes, the perception is that Blacks are more masculine (and less feminine) than whites who are more masculine than Asians. White women, for example, will date masculine Black men but not sissy-boy Asian men. And white men will date feminine Asian women but not butch Black women. Racial miscegenation makes it much harder for Black women and Asian men to get a date (their racial counterparts date outside the race, but no one from the outside dates them). They are bitter about it.

I don’t think we’ll be able to get any hard data on who is dating whom, but intuitively this observation feels right. After all blacks, for all of their incessant talk of racism and discrimination based on skin color, overwhelmingly favor light-skinned/mulatto blacks for dating and marriage, especially if they have straighter or wavier hair (Exhibit A - Halle Berry). Sydney McLaughlin is practically a Halle Berry clone so it is not surprising, she would have a black boyfriend.

As to mixed race men dating white women, I do believe that it has a lot to do with finding someone just like their mother (Exhibit B – Pat Mahomes with his white baby’s momma). I don’t follow hockey, but the recent reports of Evander Kane (White baby mama blowing him up for allegedly betting on sports!) seem to fit his profile as well.

The bulk of US athletes particularly the ones who do best at marquee events are real old stock whites, with an overabundance of WASPs and African-Americans. People with 'immigrant backgrounds' tend to be more conspicuous in other countries which haven't had any West African populations until recent times and whose genetics dispose them to do much better than the native population at certain sports.

The US gymnastics and swim team look a lot like America prior to the early 20th century. Team USA is like an Abercrombie and Fitch ad with some blacks in there. They do not 'look like America' either now or even the last few decades nor are they terrible studded with people of recent immigrant backgrounds.

There is a weird plantation owner vibe to Jeb and other elites in white countries who seem to covet vital black/brown bodies and their importation to do them some service...

Much like ¡Jeb!, Sweden yesterday enjoyed the pole vault gold medal, gotten through Armand Duplantis. While Armand was apparently born and raised in Louisiana, his mum is Swedish, so there. He even speaks some Swedish now, which is more than one might say about many of his contemporaries among immigrants.

Duplantis was previously on the US pole vault team but, as I understand it, struggled in qualifying for various important events. He switched to Sweden a couple of years back and things got better, e.g., he also holds the world record. Before the finals, his greatest opponent (from the US) got Covid and couldn't compete, while the guy who got the silver medal also turned out to be from the US.

I’m really interested in the reason for Moroccans being so proficient at the middle- to long-distance events. I looked at the list of fastest marathoners ever recently, and if I recall correctly it was just East Africans and a tiny handful of Moroccans and Japanese. I’ve been to Marrakesh and got a good look at the Atlas Mountains and it didn’t seem to me that so many of them live up there. I’m not an expert on Moroccan geography but when I think of their famous cities most are either on the coast (e.g., Casablanca, Rabat) or at an altitude that wouldn’t make much difference in terms of human evolution (e.g., Marrakesh, Fez).

  5. Q. Why do you want to know hatefacts like these anyway?

    A. They seem interesting and important. All truths are connected to each other

This leads us to the question: What are hate truths good for? My suggestion would be: They are most precious because they help us understand a rather old insight once again: That the truth is not necessarily a comfortable thing.

Truths can be stingy. – That’s why it is quite easy for the devil to make them look bad – and truthlessness look good. (This is why Goethes Mephisto in Faust is – so funny – – or was perceived as funny in those heroic times in which it was still widely accepted that – there are truths, and that quite a few of them are stingy, and that thus, it is quite easy for the devil to make them look bad, and make truthlessness look good…******

****** this is a circle, circeling within circles and it produces dizziness – philosophical dizziness too. – Thet’s where Gargantua & Pantagruel step in. And Molière. De Sade. Montaigne, Joubert, and – as their somehow stiff and uncomfortable dizzy brother: Friedrich Nietzsche and his tail of stardust: Deleuze/Guattari, Paul De Man, Goffman – – – – postmodernism, deconstructivism…Ibrahim X Kendi…

    Q. Why do you want to know hatefacts like these anyway?

If you are going to do good in this world (as opposed to appearing to do good) you need to be aware of and act on truth.
This makes the truth a useful litmus test: if somebody is acting to appear beneficently, but is uninterested in hatetruth, the beneficence is an act---the person is virtue signaling, and the result of their actions will likely be evil. Obvious case in point: Black Lives Matter. Its death toll in black lives has, as Steve has pointed out, has topped the number of lynchings in all of American history several times over is just a few years.

An interesting example is Premier League player Troy Deeney who initially married and had two children with a woman who was basically his mother both in background and physical appearance and then ditched her for a younger mixed race instagram model.

He valorised his drug-dealer father who left the family home after much domestic abuse. Maybe he idolised him because he wasn't blind to the kind of man he was, he saw exactly who he was and admired it, the same instincts were in him.

On 25 June 2012, Deeney was sentenced to ten months’ imprisonment after pleading guilty to a charge of affray, having attacked a group of students outside a nightclub. The Guardian reported that a “30-second video clip, which was played to the court several times, clearly showed both Troy Deeney and Brennan [Deeney’s friend] kicking out at the “defenceless” students, one of whom received repeated blows to the head as he lay injured”. He was released after serving almost three months of the sentence. Deeney has cited his grief surrounding his father’s death from cancer in May 2012 as a reason for the behaviour leading to his arrest in that period.

I think we can all relate to losing a parent to cancer and then proceeding to brutally kick a guy on the ground.

His new girlfriend designed the BLM logo that was put on all the sleeves of the jerseys and he basically agitated for all the BLM stuff. This eventually amounted to way more than was seen in US sports. All Premier League teams played the first 12 games with 'Black Lives Matter' on the back of their shirts in place of their names (Later copied by the NBA) and the kneeling, oh god the endless kneeling that has spread to even the GB Olympic women's hockey team.

    https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Eau27NHWsAMHVV8.jpg

Similarly in the NHL, Evander Kane, who spearheaded a big 'racism' tumult last year and founded a black NHL organisation, married and has 2 children with a white woman like his mother. He is currently going through a nasty divorce with his wife claiming he gambled away all their money and that he has taken to betting against his own team and trying to drop games.

People with ‘immigrant backgrounds’ tend to be more conspicuous in other countries which haven’t had any West African populations until recent times and whose genetics dispose them to do much better than the native population at certain sports.

An interesting example is Premier League player Troy Deeney who initially married and had two children with a woman who was basically his mother both in background and physical appearance and then ditched her for a younger mixed race instagram model.

He valorised his drug-dealer father who left the family home after much domestic abuse. Maybe he idolised him because he wasn’t blind to the kind of man he was, he saw exactly who he was and admired it, the same instincts were in him.

All Premier League teams played the first 12 games with ‘Black Lives Matter’ on the back of their shirts in place of their names (Later copied by the NBA) and the kneeling, oh god the endless kneeling that has spread to even the GB Olympic women’s hockey team.

Similarly in the NHL, Evander Kane, who spearheaded a big ‘racism’ tumult last year and founded a black NHL organisation, married and has 2 children with a white woman like his mother. He is currently going through a nasty divorce with his wife claiming he gambled away all their money and that he has taken to betting against his own team and trying to drop games.

Isn’t this related to the reason why the most racist people on Earth are Black women and Asian men? For both sexes, the perception is that Blacks are more masculine (and less feminine) than whites who are more masculine than Asians. White women, for example, will date masculine Black men but not sissy-boy Asian men. And white men will date feminine Asian women but not butch Black women. Racial miscegenation makes it much harder for Black women and Asian men to get a date (their racial counterparts date outside the race, but no one from the outside dates them). They are bitter about it.

Before the finals, his greatest opponent (from the US) got Covid and couldn’t compete, while the guy who got the silver medal also turned out to be from the US.

I’m no expert in sports medicine so I have no idea if Blacks on average are at a disadvantage for morphological reasons in events like the shot put, javelin, hammer or discus. Interestingly, in recent years Black athletes have been making inroads in those disciplines (Yego and Walcott in the javelin, Dacres in the discus for instance). When Yego burst onto the scene commentators made much of the fact that he claimed to have learned the proper technique simply by copying what he saw on TV. This gets straight to the heart of the matter: some athletics events really benefit from professional coaching, while others require innate talent.

No way it will happen, but consider a similar plot organized by genetic PCA clustering results. First for k=3 (European, Asian, African), then for higher k’s to see which most effectively capture things like the E/W Africa split. Some PCA plots after the MORE for context.

Scarlet Number makes a good point about population. How about creating another bar with that for comparison?

Here is some quantitative data for how an/aerobic contribution varies for different distances.
    http://coachr.org/energy_system_contribution_in_tr.htm

    ABSTRACT

As a wide range of values have been suggested the relative energetics of track running events, this collection of studies aimed to quantify the respective aerobic and anaerobic energy system contribution during actual track running. Subjects performed (on separate days) a laboratory graded test and multiple race time trials. The relative energy system contribution was calculated based upon measures of race VO2 and accumulated oxygen deficit. Aerobic – anaerobic energy system contributions for male track athletes were 3000m; 86% – 14%, 1500m; 77% – 23%, 800m; 60% – 40%, 400m; 47% – 59%, 200m; 28%-72% and 100m; 20% – 80%. This data, collected during specific track running events, compares well with previous estimates of relative energy system contributions. Additionally, the relative importance and speed of interaction of the respective metabolic pathways has implications to training for these events.

Not sure how to represent it visually, but adding that information to your chart might be illuminating as well.

Also note that the energy system can be broken into three pathways.

    400m; 47% – 59%

There's an error here, that doesn't add up to a hundred. In the conclusion it says the actual numbers are 41% - 59%.

    Conclusion
    In conclusion, this series of studies determined the aerobic - anaerobic energy system contribution to track running events (for males and females) of 3000m as 86% - 14% and 94% - 6% respectively, 1500m as 77% - 23% and 86% - 14%, 800m events as 60% - 40% and 70 - 30%, 400m as 41 % - 59% and 45% - 55%, 200m as 28% - 72% and 33% - 67% and finally 100m as 20% - 80% and 25% - .75%.

The closest to 50-50 is women's 400m, which is 45%-55%. Perhaps that's the best one to compare overall running superiority? Of course those numbers themselves likely depend on which race is doing the running.

I would watch Olympic level backwards running races. It might be interesting. It is a motion used a lot in sports by cornerbacks and safeties, outfielders, etc.

Aerobic - anaerobic energy system contributions for male track athletes were 3000m; 86% - 14%, 1500m; 77% - 23%, 800m; 60% - 40%, 400m; 47% - 59%, 200m; 28%-72% and 100m; 20% - 80%.

Thanks for the correction (can't believe I missed it again when I focused on that pair of figures in my self reply, sigh).

And thanks for adding the more detailed figures from the conclusion. At this point I am inclined to believe the following are true.
    1. The more elite the group we look at the more dramatic the trend will be (so Steve's top 300 would be more extreme).
    2. The male/female difference observed is partly (largely?) along those lines. In other words, in their sample the females are less highly selected than the males at the same level given that fewer women tend to participate in sports so the pool is smaller.

Good point about all of this likely depending on race as well.

Regarding the 400 m as the best "overall metric", I think based on my observations for Steve's graphic at that level it is more a sprint (and as I said above, I am surprised how little variation there is in the bar chart from 100 to 400 meters). I tend to consider the 800 best for that.

Decathlon would be an interesting event to add to this analysis.

I thing the Biochemistry/physics of running has three overlapping envelopes. In the short distance running Anaerobic metabolism (watts produced per kilogram of runner mass, Anaerobically) is the limiting function. In the medium and long distances, Aerobic metabolic efficiency (watts produced per kilo of runner mass). This in turn is generally limited by rate of oxygen supply/ CO2 removal to/from running muscles. Glucose supply is almost unlimited. In the long distance running, the limiting factor is rate of heat removal - people don't collapse because they run out of oxygen (or glucose) but because they can't throw out the heat generated. If they run out of oxygen, they slow down and gasp for air. Skinny bodies can dissipate more heat.

It’s worth pointing out that elite athletes spend almost all their time around other elite athletes, especially in college. That would mean that most of their friends and friends of friends would be elite athletes, either at their school (Ashton Eaton’s wife) or at another school (Sidney McLaughlin’s boyfriend).

I’m guessing the pool of marriage prospects is even more limited than “other elite athletes.” Lacrosse players probably don’t spend time around women’s sprinters.

Is this a case where it is more nurture than nature?

According to Steve’s bar chart above, NW Africans do best in the middle distances that Europeans do best in. NW Africans are mostly Caucasian genetically. So it may just be the case that Caucasians in general do well in those middle distances.

This (among other things) shows the idiocy of the "medal count". One swimmer can out-medal entire countries. For a century. India has won 16 gold and bronze medals from 1900 to 2016.

Nine of them were in the team sport of field hockey. But the 17 men who won gold at the last Tokyo Games only count as one medal. Gold medalists such as Baboo Nimal, Muniswamy Rajgopal, Zafar Iqbal, Roop Singh, Bakshish Singh, Sylvanus Dung Dung, Carlyle Tapsell, and Allan Schofield don't get the glory of a Phelps or a Mark Spitz. Iqbar's position was officially, and appropriately, named "left out"!

The first Indian medalist, Norman Pritchard, could pass for Lothrop Stoddard:

There are so many swimming events though, since you have all the different distances, strokes, medleys, relays, etc. It would be like if track had backwards running, sideways running, etc., in addition to regular running and hurdles.

I would watch Olympic level backwards running races. It might be interesting. It is a motion used a lot in sports by cornerbacks and safeties, outfielders, etc.

I have no problem with the number of swimming events nor with the fact that some individuals can compete in a half-dozen or more of them. It's the nature of the sport. There are probably other sports, in both the Summer and Winter Games, exhibiting the same phenomenon.

However, it makes the national medal tables look warped and stupid. Since the IOC has stated since the 19th century that national medal counts were never the point of the Games, they are what should go, not the events themselves. Problem is, it's not the IOC that publishes them, it's every news network in the world.

The National Park Service finally wised up and stopped estimating attendance at rallies on the National Mall. They had no reason to do so, and all they got were complaints. From both sides.

If you are going to do good in this world (as opposed to appearing to do good) you need to be aware of and act on truth.
This makes the truth a useful litmus test: if somebody is acting to appear beneficently, but is uninterested in hatetruth, the beneficence is an act—the person is virtue signaling, and the result of their actions will likely be evil. Obvious case in point: Black Lives Matter. Its death toll in black lives has, as Steve has pointed out, has topped the number of lynchings in all of American history several times over is just a few years.

  72. Olympic Running Provides the Most Obvious Evidence for Human Biodiversity

I have to disagree, though Olympic running or the cornerbck situation or the NBA situation (jumping) do provide a lot of evidence for HBD. The one characteristic that I think best exposes the difference is the early age at which negro toddlers can walk versus the age white toddlers learn to walk. Here is an excerpt from Black babies learn things faster than white babies because of melanin, that’s a fact and here is my source! by Charisma Allover (ackshual name)

Genius in Black Children is great.

Black kids are naturally precocious and talented. IT’s a head start, we have.

US Black people have a unique developmental psychology.

    http://africawithin.com/wilson/wilson_books.htm

Plus, here are some more facts:

Black babies do things faster than white babies.

Like learn to hold an automatic pistol sideways in order to more randomly wound bystanders.

IT takes the black baby 9 hours to Be drawn in a sitting position able to prevent the head from falling backwards.

But it takes a WHOLE 6 weeks for the white baby to do that same thing.

Perhaps the white baby is preoccupied with stock options and differential calculus.

IN 2 days the black baby can hold the head firm and look into the examiner’s eyes.

IT takes the white child 8 weeks.

It takes 7 WEEKS for the black baby to support himself or herself into a sitting position and watch her reflection in the mirror While it takes a WHOLE 20 weeks for the white baby to do this.

The black baby can hold himself/herself upright in 5 months but it takes a WHOLE 9 months for the white baby to Do the same thing!

THe black baby takes the round block out of its hole in the form board at 5 MONTHS and the white baby does this in 11 months.

The black baby stands against the mirror in 5 months, the white baby does this in 9 months.

THe black baby walks to the Gesell box to look inside in 7 months and it takes the white baby a whole 15 months.

The Black baby can climb the steps ALONE in 11 months and the white baby does this in 15 months.

THese facts are all because of the black baby having melanin. SO the black baby is smarter than the white baby.

Again, you already know our BLACK people made just about everything so it’s no surprise hear.

Here! Here! NEGROES made everything. Surprise!!!

I found these results in the book Blacked OUt through WHitewash by Dr Suzar Epps. It’s on different sites like barnesandnoble.com and other sites that sell books.

From some random article I found on the web by DuckDuckGoing How soon do chimpanzees learn to walk.

Why Does It Take a Year For Human Babies to Walk, When Other Animals Walk So Much Sooner?

    Money graf

The bottom line is that human beings have evolved to allot much more time for brain development. In this respect, the amount of things an infant needs to learn and develop is far greater in human beings, and the extended brain development time enables us to have such large brains with such incredible capacities.

Negro babies’ brains reach development stages faster than white babies’ brains. I suspect this is at the expense of IQ. In the negroes’ natural environment, it is necessary to be able to walk at an earlier age lest Aslan break stride and settle down for a snack.

How long does it take a baby chimp to learn to hold its head up and to learn to walk?

I don’t think we’ll be able to get any hard data on who is dating whom, but intuitively this observation feels right. After all blacks, for all of their incessant talk of racism and discrimination based on skin color, overwhelmingly favor light-skinned/mulatto blacks for dating and marriage, especially if they have straighter or wavier hair (Exhibit A – Halle Berry).

  75. Armin Hary won the 100 meters at the 1960 olympics. The last White man to set the world record at 100 meters. Armin used to theorize that the brain has a governor that keeps the body from performing at a level at which it would “disintegrate.” Maybe he is right, and the setting of the sprinting governor is set differently for blacks. The brain allows them to come closer to the disintegration point. Sometimes too close, resulting in a disintegration injury. That’s what happened to Simone Biles, she disintegrated psychologically because her governor allowed her to go for it. I can see how this might have evolved. If a lion is chasing you, get the heck out of there, even exceeding the disintegration-risk point. You might disintegrate, but that’s better than being a meal for the lion.

While I agree 100% with Steve and find the nature v. nurture argument to be entirely settled when it comes to running, the same isn't true for some other events.
Out of pure curiosity I'm very interested in the development of throwing events in athletics because these have been dominated by Whites, but are becoming more diverse over time. I'm no expert in sports medicine so I have no idea if Blacks on average are at a disadvantage for morphological reasons in events like the shot put, javelin, hammer or discus. This gets straight to the heart of the matter: some athletics events really benefit from professional coaching, while others require innate talent.

having said that, the premise is solid. the basic version of running is super low skill. one foot in front of the other. but, how much different is it really versus throwing or jumping? also 2 very basic, every man does this type of thing. there’s a pretty thin line between how basic running is versus throwing and jumping.

the totally visible and extremely evident difference in intelligence between the various humans of the world is more obvious than the difference in athletic ability though. other people can hang with west african athletes in their best sports, but no west africans are among the top 1000 people in any intellectual field. indeed, they can barely even keep anything resembling civilization going on their own. this fact is actually in part what engenders the crazy, pro african tilt of the entire western society now, as a make-up project for african shortcomings.

Coburn dqd by stepping inside the track, but she wasn't in contention at that point. Taken from a report on the race, Coburn obviously could have used a script: "“It sucks to suck on the biggest.”

    Replies: @S. Anonyia

At least Coburn wasn’t going on about her mental health.

Courtney Freirichs got silver because of her early kick, it was a smart tactic and she may not have medaled otherwise. She simply wore out everyone else except the Ugandan. White distance/middle distance runners should take note, and kick earlier than their East African competitors to stay in the mix.

What about running a book on when the first 13 or 14 year old skateboarder turns into a mental disaster?

Why does no-one suggest that being a professional sports girl at 10 (eg UK's Sky Brown) is perhaps a tad young. Brown's backers positively relish talking about her broken bones.

"Sky had the gnarliest fall she's ever had and is lucky to be alive," Stu said at the time. "Sky remains positive and strong. The whole medical team is shocked to see her positivity."

  94. Probably the best analogy for your argument is not running but American Football. Who will produce more NFL lineman: Samoans or Cambodians? Anything genetic about that!? It’s hard to argue against that example. (I believe Samoans are more overrepresented in the NFL than Kenyans are overrepresented in distance running based on population – there just aren’t many Samoans).

Ultimately all sports select for certain characteristics, but often these characteristics are less obvious to the casual observer or are even yet to be discovered. A good example is eyesight and hitting in Major League Baseball. MLB players (perhaps excluding pitchers) tend to have exceptional eyesight, which is partially determined by the amount of individual cones in your eyes.

For distance running – just like NFL offensive lineman – you really need a very specific build to get to the elite level. (There are obviously other important characteristics, most notably lung capacity, but the higher up you go the more important it is that you have the complete package). Even successful Division 1 distance runners are usually very svelte. I met Ryan Hall before his Olympic marathon appearance (and before his current roided-out meathead phase??) and he looked like a Kenyan with white skin: 5-10 and 130 pounds (though Kenyans are usually much shorter) with an exceptionally bird-like frame. As I describe it, his ankles were as big as my wrists and his thumbs looked like my pinkies (for reference I’m 5-9 and stocky-ish but always below 20% body fat).

“If one assumes that the world-wide black population is 1/7, then the random chance of 79 out of 80 100m finalists being black is 1 in 8.45 x 10^60.”

    Please show your work.
    P = probability of runner being black = 1/7
    Q = probability of runner being non-black = 6/7
    (N nCr R) = number of ways to pick R out of N choices = N!/(R!*(N-R)!)
    Prb{exactly 79 of 80 finalists are black} = (80 nCr 79)(1/7)^79*(6/7)^1 = 1.18412632*10^65
    Prb{exactly 80 of 80 finalists are black} = (1/7)^80 = 2.46692984*10^68
    Prb{79 or more of 80 finalists are black} = 1.18659325*10^65

Where does this 10^60 come from?

    • Replies: @ScarletNumber
    @Mark Spahn (West Seneca, NY)

Your math is so so close, but since you are calculating probability, remember that probability is a number between 0 and 1. Therefore, your final answers should have negative exponents and the probability is 1.18659325 x 10^-65.

Now I expressed the answer in terms of odds, not probability, but you will see that the reciprocal of 1.18659325 x 10^-65 is 8.45 x 10^64.

The 60 was a typo, but I stand by the rest of the answer.

This (among other things) shows the idiocy of the “medal count”. One swimmer can out-medal entire countries. For a century. India has won 16 gold and bronze medals from 1900 to 2016.

It’s the nature of the sport. There are probably other sports, in both the Summer and Winter Games, exhibiting the same phenomenon.

However, it makes the national medal tables look warped and stupid. Since the IOC has stated since the 19th century that national medal counts were never the point of the Games, they are what should go, not the events themselves. Problem is, it’s not the IOC that publishes them, it’s every news network in the world.

The National Park Service finally wised up and stopped estimating attendance at rallies on the National Mall. They had no reason to do so, and all they got were complaints. From both sides.

And thanks for adding the more detailed figures from the conclusion. At this point I am inclined to believe the following are true.
    1. The more elite the group we look at the more dramatic the trend will be (so Steve’s top 300 would be more extreme).
    2. The male/female difference observed is partly (largely?) along those lines. In other words, in their sample the females are less highly selected than the males at the same level given that fewer women tend to participate in sports so the pool is smaller.

Good point about all of this likely depending on race as well.

Regarding the 400 m as the best “overall metric”, I think based on my observations for Steve’s graphic at that level it is more a sprint (and as I said above, I am surprised how little variation there is in the bar chart from 100 to 400 meters). I tend to consider the 800 best for that.

Decathlon would be an interesting event to add to this analysis.

I didn't think to look at that, good thinking. Looks like males always rely more on anaerobic energy than females for the same distance.

Might mostly be a general sex difference due to explosive strength being more useful for fighting, hunting and war. Not so useful for household work.

Well, that graphic is for men, I was talking about women's 400m. Of course maybe doping is a lot more important for women and some countries may not encourage women's sports, so perhaps not as good for comparing natural ability.

For men, both 400m and 800m are about 40-60 except in reverse, at least for non-elite(mostly white?) men. Men's 600m at first glance seems to have decent representation of both Kenyans and diaspora West Africans: http://www.alltime-athletics.com/m_600ok.htm

@Steve Sailer Might want to add those numbers to the graph.

Actually, he’s Maximus the Marauder, mascot of the University of Mary in Bismarck, helping freshmen move in.

My cousin’s college did this too, but it was US Marines who carried the boxes. One of them encouraged my cuz to sign up for ROTC to pump up her GPA. She did, and became a career officer in the Army.

The pact between women and men is – since ages – not to stir up controversies. The Euopean knights in medieval times for example strived to learn how to honor and adore and – praise publicly – and gracefully! – the beauty and the elegance and the high spirits of the women – and the women learned to praise the men for their – power/success/strength – and willingness to adore women.

Has intelligence a place in there somewhere? – Of course, it does. Did people know it? Of course, they did. Would they have wanted to be more explicit about these things? – Not at all, because this would have meant to hurt rule No. 1 – do not stir up controversies.

What to do now with all these contradictions? – Be cool. – And beware – handle them with – grace and dignity. And humor – a true societal glue – and healing power. May I add: Humor does not imply snowflakery!

This (among other things) shows the idiocy of the “medal count”. One swimmer can out-medal entire countries. For a century. India has won 16 gold and bronze medals from 1900 to 2016.

  136. In addition to HBD, the Olympics also reveals quite a bit of info about certain cultures. The firebrand Jason Whitlock takes it to black American concerning the 4×100 relay performance. “In our country, Olympic-level sprinting is dominated by black men. The 4 x 100 relay requires four black American men to work cohesively together for approximately 38 seconds.” And they couldn’t pull it off . . .

What about running a book on when the first 13 or 14 year old skateboarder turns into a mental disaster?

Why does no-one suggest that being a professional sports girl at 10 (eg UK's Sky Brown) is perhaps a tad young. Brown's backers positively relish talking about her broken bones.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/57998750

"In May last year, Brown fell from a ramp in training, fracturing her skull, breaking her left arm and wrist and suffering lacerations to her heart and lungs.

"Sky had the gnarliest fall she's ever had and is lucky to be alive," Stu said at the time. "Sky remains positive and strong. The whole medical team is shocked to see her positivity."

"If one assumes that the world-wide black population is 1/7, then the random chance of 79 out of 80 100m finalists being black is 1 in 8.45 x 10^60."

    Please show your work.
    P = probability of runner being black = 1/7
    Q = probability of runner being non-black = 6/7

    Replies: @ScarletNumber

Your math is so so close, but since you are calculating probability, remember that probability is a number between 0 and 1. Therefore, your final answers should have negative exponents and the probability is 1.18659325 x 10^-65.

Now I expressed the answer in terms of odds, not probability, but you will see that the reciprocal of 1.18659325 x 10^-65 is 8.45 x 10^64.

The 60 was a typo, but I stand by the rest of the answer.

You can see something like that if you’ve been watching the Olympics over the years. As the writer Steve Sailer notes, runners of West African descent have dominated Olympic sprint events for years (a Chinese runner was the first sprinter with no such ancestry to qualify as a finalist since 1980), and runners of East African descent have dominated long-distance races for years as well.
