Karsten Warholm’s arm motion when he runs looks like a cartoon (maybe Popeye or R. Crumb?) about a man dead set on breaking the world record.

The phenomenon of competition improving performance is very interesting. Warholm may have smashed his world record set earlier this year, but his close rival Benjamin also smashed the previous record’s time, this despite the fact that until this year the world record had held for almost 30 years! A similar phenomenon took place in 2009 with the 100m world record.

Aside from the other factors mentioned, apparently the track surface in Tokyo is very springy, which bounces energy back into the runners and therefore the running times have been very fast.

  2. He runs like Ivan Drago would run the 400 meter hurdles.

Too bad there was no crowd for such a great race.

BTW, I just dropped $5 or whatever on the Peacock app. I wanted to watch the basketball, but NBC puts that behind the paywall on the app and puts women’s wrestling on TV.

I strongly suspect that Karsten Warholm's training did not strongly resemble that shown in Chariots of Fire:

It is hard to believe that all these cops are committing suicide, unless the cops who were chosen for Capitol protection duty were those who had already demonstrated some kind of mental instability, and this work was regarded as a sinecure for those unsuited for police work on the mean streets of Washington.

It seems unlikely that they are being systematically assassinated for being snitches.

    Related, somehow:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Socialist_Underground_murders
»The National Socialist Underground murders (German: NSU-Mordserie) were a series of xenophobic murders by the German Neo-Nazi terrorist group National Socialist Underground (Nationalsozialistischer Untergrund; abbreviated NSU). The NSU perpetrated the attacks between 2000 and 2007 throughout Germany, leaving ten people dead and one wounded. The primary targets were ethnic Turks, though the victims also included one ethnic Greek and one German policewoman.«

This is from my notes, deepl.com translation:

    - In 2009, an NSU witness burns to death in his car shortly before he can testify.

    - In 2013, another witness burns to death in his car on the day he is supposed to testify in court.

    - The MP Sebastian Edathy successfully chairs an NSU investigation committee from 2012, but a little later child pornography is found on his computer and he has to resign as committee chair.

    - An undercover agent related to the case is found dead in his flat in 2014 (by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution), officially dead of "diabetes".

    - In 2015, a witness is supposed to testify, who shortly before is admitted to hospital with a small bruise on her knee and then dies there, according to the death certificate, of (attention:) pulmonary embolism.

    - The fiancé of the witness who died of "pulmonary embolism" drove her to the hospital - and has also been dead since February 2016.

    - In February 2017, another witness dies unexpectedly in Ludwigsburg, shortly before she receives the summons from the investigative committee. The cause of death can no longer be determined by a forensic pathologist, as the body is surprisingly and unplanned quickly cremated.

    - Fire investigator and forensic scientist Frank Dieter Stolt dies unexpectedly in a Mannheim hospital. Stolt was completely healthy, fell into a coma for unexplained reasons and died immediately. The cause of death is so unclear that his family has now commissioned a post-mortem examination. Stolt was in charge of investigations as part of the NSZ investigation, and he was very critical of it.

    - For years, undercover agents in the NSU environment were financed, in some cases with six-figure sums.

    - Officials of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution destroyed relevant files after the NSU became known.

    - The right-wing extremist and undercover agent Thomas Starke delivered about 1.1 kg of TNT to NSU terrorist Uwe Mundlos in 1995 or 1996. A preliminary investigation against him was dropped.

    - An employee of the Hessian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution was present when Halit Yozgat was murdered.

A Swiss paper of record on this, in Germany this is hot potatoes: https://www.nzz.ch/international/nsu-prozess-fuenf-antworten-zu-den-ungereimtheiten-ld.1402297

There's dozens more details that stink to heaven, I'm just to lethargic to compile and link them. One such thing: the two main perps were killed in a firefight while sitting in a camper that burned to the ground, yet, a year later or so, the police claimed to have found an incriminating video in mint condition in the remains of the camper. Excerpts of that video were then widely shown in TV.

A relelated fun fact for lovers of conspiracies: in 2003 the government tried to have the right-wing party NPD banned (pretty bad folks, indeed, many representatives disturbingly stupid), but they couldn't. The German Federal Constitutional Court in a ruling from March, 18th, 2003, decided it couldn't ban them, as they were so infiltrated by the secret service that it had become something of a quango, legally. (that you can't ban, duh) Some German sources at a legal blog and WP article:

  4. The pressure on Chinese athletes to perform has never been higher. Anything less than a gold is being seen as athletes being unpatriotic by furious nationalists online. The BBC’s Waiyee Yip reports.

For the ultra-nationalist crowd, losing an Olympic medal is akin to being “unpatriotic”, experts told the BBC.

Anti-Japanese sentiments on Weibo ran high throughout the match, as users called Mizutani and Ito all manners of names.

    Based.

Other targeted athletes included sharpshooter Yang Qian – despite her taking the Tokyo Games’ first gold medal.

Her downfall? An old Weibo post where she had showed off her Nike shoe collection.

People were not pleased, given how the brand is among those boycotted for its pledge to stop using Xinjiang cotton over forced labour concerns.

“As a Chinese athlete, why do you have to collect Nike shoes? Shouldn’t you lead the way in boycotting Nike?” one comment read.

Yang has since deleted the post.

The brief "Oxford reference" does not mention that Baron Burghley used matchboxes rather than glasses of champagne, but it's fun to imagine some Lord becoming "drunk as a Lord" by quaffing the libations after a run. However, one should not think of such a gentleman then failing to embrace "the power of and" - before finally falling into an Oxford Coma[sic].

    – In 2009, an NSU witness burns to death in his car shortly before he can testify.

    – In 2013, another witness burns to death in his car on the day he is supposed to testify in court.

    – The MP Sebastian Edathy successfully chairs an NSU investigation committee from 2012, but a little later child pornography is found on his computer and he has to resign as committee chair.

    – An undercover agent related to the case is found dead in his flat in 2014 (by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution), officially dead of “diabetes”.

    – In 2015, a witness is supposed to testify, who shortly before is admitted to hospital with a small bruise on her knee and then dies there, according to the death certificate, of (attention:) pulmonary embolism.

    – The fiancé of the witness who died of “pulmonary embolism” drove her to the hospital – and has also been dead since February 2016.

    – In February 2017, another witness dies unexpectedly in Ludwigsburg, shortly before she receives the summons from the investigative committee. The cause of death can no longer be determined by a forensic pathologist, as the body is surprisingly and unplanned quickly cremated.

    – Fire investigator and forensic scientist Frank Dieter Stolt dies unexpectedly in a Mannheim hospital. Stolt was completely healthy, fell into a coma for unexplained reasons and died immediately. The cause of death is so unclear that his family has now commissioned a post-mortem examination. Stolt was in charge of investigations as part of the NSZ investigation, and he was very critical of it.

    – For years, undercover agents in the NSU environment were financed, in some cases with six-figure sums.

    – Officials of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution destroyed relevant files after the NSU became known.

    – The right-wing extremist and undercover agent Thomas Starke delivered about 1.1 kg of TNT to NSU terrorist Uwe Mundlos in 1995 or 1996. A preliminary investigation against him was dropped.

    – An employee of the Hessian State Office for the Protection of the Constitution was present when Halit Yozgat was murdered.

A Swiss paper of record on this, in Germany this is hot potatoes: https://www.nzz.ch/international/nsu-prozess-fuenf-antworten-zu-den-ungereimtheiten-ld.1402297

There’s dozens more details that stink to heaven, I’m just to lethargic to compile and link them. One such thing: the two main perps were killed in a firefight while sitting in a camper that burned to the ground, yet, a year later or so, the police claimed to have found an incriminating video in mint condition in the remains of the camper. Excerpts of that video were then widely shown in TV.

A relelated fun fact for lovers of conspiracies: in 2003 the government tried to have the right-wing party NPD banned (pretty bad folks, indeed, many representatives disturbingly stupid), but they couldn’t. The German Federal Constitutional Court in a ruling from March, 18th, 2003, decided it couldn’t ban them, as they were so infiltrated by the secret service that it had become something of a quango, legally. (that you can’t ban, duh) Some German sources at a legal blog and WP article:

Since the genuine members of such infiltrated groups are so "toxic", a cynical approach might be to encourage people-- anyone, SJW, Turk, a Mohammed Bouyeri or Volkert van der Graaf-- to dispatch one a random. This puts the infiltrators at some risk. And their agency in a difficult position-- how to defend their men without defending their targets.

And not just the agency, but the entire corrupt superstructure directing it.

For elite athletes I would call the 400 meter hurdles a sprint. I mean, 45-46 seconds is a very good flat 400 time at any major collegiate meet.

For elites even the 800 isn’t completely a “run” either, they need decent (but not world-class) sprint speed to be competitive. They often sprint the first and last 50-100 meters. Strength and speed endurance are key to the 800.

For the 1500 and up it’s solidly a run.

(Anthropologists will give it an African origin – – chasing-down a lion, hurdling over the brush, spears raised high.) But actually, there used to be a term called “the rig” – short for “rigor mortis” – – to describe the leg stiffening that sets-in at the end of a 400 meters. Maybe in the 400 m hurdles arm-pumping is a solution for the rig.

A visual riff on the lyrics of the Blind Boy Fuller song “Truckin’ My Blues Away”, it consists of an assortment of men, drawn in Crumb’s distinctive style, strutting confidently across various landscapes. Steve did you see this? I thought of you:

In the W’s 100m hurdles, not one but two false starts were triggered by the weave of a black runner! Her humongous ponytail fell down as she was in the set position. I think she’s from the Bahamas. You gotta love the reaction of the British commentator, who sounds a lot like Michael Caine, “Oh my goodness me! I think it is the ponytail, again!” Since she did not physically move, she was not disqualified.

In fact, it fell down again a third time, but this time they attributed the false start to the poor runner next to her and disqualified her from the semi-final. The runner with the troublesome hair ended up near dead last, probably dragged down by all that hair. It didn’t look very aerodynamic.

Maybe she would’ve done better if she had retained her natural hair:

In high school track you'd be figuratively executed on the spot for wearing so much as a stud earring.

Jewelry and other accessories have and will always be hazards to track competitors and should be banned at all levels.
  31. What most people might not consider is just how much faster these tracks have become since the introduction of artificial tracks since the days of the first one called “tartan turf”.

Bob Hayes ran on a crushed cinder track that was full of ruts because it wasn’t manicured after the completion of the 10,000 meters and he was put in lane 1. Prior to that they ran on even slower dirt and clay tracks.

We also have the difference in the track shoes. Back in those days there were 4 spikes on the shoe and the sole was basically plastic with some foam covering it (and probably hard leather before that). These new shoes have a lot of spring built in even to the point that some shoes are being disallowed for having an obvious plastic spring being built into the sole.

For the 1500 and up it’s solidly a run.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keep_On_Truckin%27_(comics)

Keep On Truckin' is a one-page comic by Robert Crumb. It was published in the first issue of Zap Comix in 1968. A visual riff on the lyrics of the Blind Boy Fuller song "Truckin' My Blues Away", it consists of an assortment of men, drawn in Crumb's distinctive style, strutting confidently across various landscapes. The strip's drawings became iconic images of optimism during the hippie era.

Although associated with the hippies by way of the underground comix counterculture, Crumb himself was hardly a hippie; watch the documentary about him and you’ll find he’s something of a reactionary, and a musical antiquarian. He’s far better versed in old black American music than most, including yourself.

  43. Think about it: The world record for 100 meters is around 10 seconds. 46 Seconds to run 400 meter hurdles is equal to 4 x 100 meter dashes at 11.5 seconds each, and you have to jump over things along the way. Incredible.

The pressure on Chinese athletes to perform has never been higher. Anything less than a gold is being seen as athletes being unpatriotic by furious nationalists online. The BBC's Waiyee Yip reports.

For the ultra-nationalist crowd, losing an Olympic medal is akin to being "unpatriotic", experts told the BBC.

Anti-Japanese sentiments on Weibo ran high throughout the match, as users called Mizutani and Ito all manners of names.

Other targeted athletes included sharpshooter Yang Qian - despite her taking the Tokyo Games' first gold medal.

Her downfall? An old Weibo post where she had showed off her Nike shoe collection.

People were not pleased, given how the brand is among those boycotted for its pledge to stop using Xinjiang cotton over forced labour concerns.

"As a Chinese athlete, why do you have to collect Nike shoes? Shouldn't you lead the way in boycotting Nike?" one comment read.

Americans have a tendency to root for the underdog, which is what White short distance runners are. That accounts for the mostly benign (i.e. not racist) interest in sprinter Matthew Boling now at the University of Georgia. I will root for a Black person who is a contestant on Jeopardy. Same thing. What most people might not consider is just how much faster these tracks have become since the introduction of artificial tracks since the days of the first one called "tartan turf".

Bob Hayes ran on a crushed cinder track that was full of ruts because it wasn't manicured after the completion of the 10,000 meters and he was put in lane 1.

    Replies: @Buffalo Joe

Mark, thank you. I mentioned the other day that tracks used to be cinder. Your foot pushed back cinders as you ran. Today, on the synthetic tracks your spikes grab a purchase and you push off not back. On the other hand, todays athletes are bigger, stronger, faster.

The only advantages the old guys had was that the starting blocks were not wired for pressure and everybody was allowed one false start. Some guys were very good at anticipating the gun. The races were hand timed with stop watches so there was quite a bit of inaccuracy there although it could go both ways. Multiple people timed the races and they argued until they came to consensus.

The advantage to today's athletes is that you can make a living as a track athlete so full time training is possible. Back then you had to be an "amateur". Unless you were part of a national team you got some support from a "track club" like the Striders out here in the west, and it wasn't much. They all had to have outside jobs which put a clamp on your training.

According to the movie, Steve Prefontaine was living in a trailer before he was killed in a car accident. Today he would be a millionaire runner living in a big house in a well off area.

I’m seeing boomer conservatives openly cheering for white athletes from other countries against “American” black athletes. We are still making huge gains on the regular. Racial polarization is skyrocketing now.

Americans have a tendency to root for the underdog, which is what White short distance runners are. That accounts for the mostly benign (i.e. not racist) interest in sprinter Matthew Boling now at the University of Georgia. I will root for a Black person who is a contestant on Jeopardy. Same thing. So the racist "gains" you are making are probably somewhat inflated.

Note that "American" black athletes actually are real Americans.

Also note that the race profiles were reversed in the 1970's/1980's for the 400 meter intermediate hurdles. World class German hurdler Harald Schmidt was the Rai Benjamin to Edwin Moses as Karsten Warholm. I'm old enough to remember some of their great races. So elite fast White guys running hurdles is not a new thing.

BTW, Edwin Moses was/is also an American rather than an "American".

China had a runner named Liu Xiang who won the 110-m hurdles in Athens and was favored to win the race in Beijing, but he came up limping off the starting blocks during one of the heats. Grandparent cry.

Hopefully the IFWMW will step up to the plate to insist that all competitors must be XX chromosomed, to insure the purity of their sport.

Mark, thank you. I mentioned the other day that tracks used to be cinder. Your foot pushed back cinders as you ran. Today, on the synthetic tracks your spikes grab a purchase and you push off not back. On the other hand, todays athletes are bigger, stronger, faster.

    Replies: @MarkinLA

The only advantages the old guys had was that the starting blocks were not wired for pressure and everybody was allowed one false start. Some guys were very good at anticipating the gun. The races were hand timed with stop watches so there was quite a bit of inaccuracy there although it could go both ways. Multiple people timed the races and they argued until they came to consensus.

The advantage to today’s athletes is that you can make a living as a track athlete so full time training is possible. Back then you had to be an “amateur”. Unless you were part of a national team you got some support from a “track club” like the Striders out here in the west, and it wasn’t much. They all had to have outside jobs which put a clamp on your training.

According to the movie, Steve Prefontaine was living in a trailer before he was killed in a car accident. Today he would be a millionaire runner living in a big house in a well off area.

    Replies: @MarkinLA

Beach volleyball should be eliminated. It has none of the power and strategy of the gym game. I give Karch Karaly and his buddies credit for making a living from this garbage but it is a place for second class players who couldn’t make the real team. It is just so boring to watch weak hits and lot of dinks and dunks.

I rooted for Bobby Fischer until halfway through his Icelandic contests with Boris Spassky. But his antics were so embarrassing that, as anti-Communist as I was, I switched to backing the perfect gentleman who had to put up with him.

Spassky remained Fischer’s friend until the end. Just as backing Goldwater over LBJ a few years earlier (while still in kneepants), it was a choice I have never once regretted.

I was also so sick of the “Dream Team” and its train of hyperbole that I secretly wished little Croatia or Lithuania would pull an upset.

Although associated with the hippies by way of the underground comix counterculture, Crumb himself was hardly a hippie; watch the documentary about him and you’ll find he’s something of a reactionary, and a musical antiquarian. He’s far better versed in old black American music than most, including yourself.

Steve did you see this? I thought of you:

In the W's 100m hurdles, not one but two false starts were triggered by the weave of a black runner! Her humongous ponytail fell down as she was in the set position. I think she's from the Bahamas. You gotta love the reaction of the British commentator, who sounds a lot like Michael Caine, "Oh my goodness me! I think it is the ponytail, again!" Since she did not physically move, she was not disqualified.

In fact, it fell down again a third time, but this time they attributed the false start to the poor runner next to her and disqualified her from the semi-final. The runner with the troublesome hair ended up near dead last, probably dragged down by all that hair. It didn't look very aerodynamic.

Maybe she would've done better if she had retained her natural hair:

I can’t stand how all these idiots are running track in Mr. T levels of jewelry.

In high school track you’d be figuratively executed on the spot for wearing so much as a stud earring.

Jewelry and other accessories have and will always be hazards to track competitors and should be banned at all levels.

Not only did he win, Warholm implied Benjamin had an advantage from his Nike shoes:

The new 400m hurdles Olympic champion Karsten Warholm has criticised Nike’s super spikes as “bullshit” – saying they act like trampolines and take away from the credibility of track and field. The Norwegian, who was speaking after winning gold in 45.94sec, a world record and a performance widely recognised as one of the greatest in history, said his great rival Rai Benjamin “ran on air”, adding: “He had those things in his shoes, which I hate.”

Pelosi wants “hearings” on the Jan. 6 (false-flag psy-op), but she sure does NOT want the record cluttered with inconvenient statements, let alone any hostile questions from Republican congressmen.

No, better to be rid of these turbulent priests. . .

  82. Running very fast is tough. Hurdles make it 5x tougher and dangerous if you hit one, that could be career ending. So I respect fast runners but fast hurdlers much more. Never in my life would I try jumping hurdles on a horse. Far too dangerous, however it is a very popular test and sport within the horsey set. The old movies would have fox chasers jumping over all kinds of obstacles in the fox hunt.

  83. We need to bring back tug-of-war! We should add in sports that use frisbees. Has 43 man Squamish been played at the Olympics? It should be.
