You know, if I lived in Compton I might be in danger from crime, gang activity, a nearby abusive spouse and so on. But I wouldn’t try to solve the problem by paying thousands of dollars to criminals to sneak me into Canada. I would move to Torrance or Reno, or wherever. Yeah. We don't have many blacks in Oz (except in advertisements) so our SJWs have jumped on the 'let in all the refugees' bandwagon instead. The refugees are all Muslim. Every one of them had the choice of 50 Muslim countries they could have gone to, all of which are vastly closer, most are stable and few of which are poor (several are stinking rich thanks to oil). But they come here.

This has turned into a vote changing issue for me since 2 of the 3 main political parties support letting in all the refugees, which is just a covert pro-Islam program as far as I'm concerned.

It is mostly (albeit not all) bullshit, of course.

People come here because (a) there are enough of their compatriots for them to feel comfortable, and (b) they can make a much better living.

Let's suppose you're living in the US and making $50,000 a year. If you could move to Canada and make $500,000, you'd at least think about it. I mean, there are Americans in Canada, and...

There really is a serious point here. Let some national community start coming and you're for it. For example, about one out of every six Salvadoreans in the world is now here.

Well, there are only eight million Salvadoreans or so, so that's tolerable. But there are, for example, three hundred million Nigerians. 1.2 billion Indians. What happens when they seriously start in? Why aren't they going to come?

Open borders is obviously a recipe for national suicide. I can't understand how people can seriously pretend not to see it.

Tradition is simply handing something over to another. And a translation enables someone in the target language to benefit from the message in the original.

Is she now planning to give the people of Guatemala,Honduras, and El Salvador the same rights as Cubans? I though those countries had friendly US puppet governments and that Cuba was run by the damned Commies.

How come far less asylum seekers are coming from Nicaragua? I though Nicaragua was run by damned Commies too. This is all so confusing. No wonder Harris is all mixed-up. All those countries down there look about the same, and they are all hot and dirty, so how can you tell them apart?

Can’t we just lob a few bombs at the barrios of Guatemala City and solve their overpopulation problem? Or set up some contraceptive clinics.

For some reason the press seems to be expecting Harris to head for the border, where she will immediately wave a magic wand and be like Jesus going up onto a high mountain with a great view to express profound thoughts. And then everything will be OK as she realizes that all that is needed is a bloody great wall like the Great Wall of China.

What is the woke solution? Perhaps offer bonuses for men who are willing to be castrated.

Harris seems to be employing the jargon of quality improvement when she says she is looking for the root causes of poor people leaving the Northern Triangle and migrating to the US. Could it be that life is better even in temporary refugee housing in the USA than in the barrios of Guatemala City and Tegucigalpa?

No doubt Harris will soon be reporting back to Biden with some ideas, and maybe she will even take an peek at the Mexican border so as to give the press corps a photo op of her admiring the cactuses and pinning border agents with their long-service medals. Um, she's already done THAT spin, Jonathan. She basically said exactly that; she's from CA which borders the shit hole known as "Mexico" so as far as she's concerned, she knows exactly what's going on down on "the border." Perhaps she "knows" that people in San Diego were so tired of Mexicans running through their backyards that BILL CLINTON had to build his version of a "big, beautiful wall" in the 1990's to cordon off the contagion of Tijuana. It has flood lights and a wide open buffer zone so that BP agents can see anyone who jumps the wall.

San Diego has a trolley line to the San Ysidro border crossing. The transit authority uses a German-style "honor system" on its trains (or at least it did when I visited in the '90s.) But the police always check the tickets on that segment.

No doubt Harris will soon be reporting back to Biden with some ideas, and maybe she will even take an peek at the Mexican border so as to give the press corps a photo op of her admiring the cactuses and pinning border agents with their long-service medals. Or then again, she could send as assistant to scope out the border.

“Harris’ stern message that Guatemalan migrants aren’t welcome in the U.S. received widespread coverage in American media outlets. But her plea fell on deaf ears or was dismissed by the very people it was aimed at: Central Americans thinking about migrating to the U.S.

“People are going to continue migrating to the U.S.,” said Nery Vasquez, a taxi driver in the department of San Marcos, who dismissed the suggestion that Harris’ comments could change migration flows as nothing short of ludicrous.”

You know, if I lived in Compton I might be in danger from crime, gang activity, a nearby abusive spouse and so on. But I wouldn't try to solve the problem by paying thousands of dollars to criminals to sneak me into Canada. I would move to Torrance or Reno, or wherever. I'm sure that whatever problems these "refugees" have can be solved within their own country, for a fraction of the cost of moving to the U.S.

    Replies: @photondancer, @babu, @Colin Wright

Yeah. We don’t have many blacks in Oz (except in advertisements) so our SJWs have jumped on the ‘let in all the refugees’ bandwagon instead. The refugees are all Muslim. Every one of them had the choice of 50 Muslim countries they could have gone to, all of which are vastly closer, most are stable and few of which are poor (several are stinking rich thanks to oil). But they come here.

This has turned into a vote changing issue for me since 2 of the 3 main political parties support letting in all the refugees, which is just a covert pro-Islam program as far as I’m concerned.

People denouncing Tijuana really do not know what they are talking about, because the city has changed remarkably for the better in the 40 years I've been going down there. Are most neighborhoods sh*tholes? Sure, just stay out of the bad parts, and if you go to the red light district (Zona Norte), bring some friends. Safety in numbers.

They have an outstanding gastronomic district, many craft breweries, and some of the best steaks and seafood I've ever had. Right now they're selling condos overlooking the golf course that start at a million dollars USD, so there are some very nice parts of the city.

I use Tijuana as a base for launching domestic flights into the interior of Mexico for a fraction of the cost. A couple of weeks ago I got airfare for two and six nights in a very nice hotel for $538, a steal.

I've often parked on the street at the trolley station in Chula Vista and taken the trolley to San Ysidro and walked across the border, but leaving my car for a weekend in a sketchy neighborhood in Chula Vista isn't great. The Mexican customs officials in San Ysidro are surly and corrupt and will try to get a $30 bribe from you when you enter by making you fill out an FMM form, then you watch them put the money in their pocket. I'm not crossing there anymore. Otay Mesa is much better.

Last trip we took the Amtrak to downtown San Diego (Santa Fe station, which is gorgeous), then hopped on the 225 bus to Otay Mesa, and walk into Mexico, a much nicer, hassle-free border crossing. Otay is also much easier to get back into the states than San Ysidro, so I am not standing in a covid line for 4 hours trying to get home.

Most people, including Heels Up Harris, don't know anything about Mexico.

Most politicians seem pretty dumb when they get in front of cameras, for example Donald Trump, Joe Biden, George W. Bush, but then they are not actors.

But we don't really know what these people are like when they are actually working at what they are good at. Presumably as a successful former prosecutor Harris knows how to handle a brief, and for all the reports of the failure of her trip from a PR point of view, there is very little reporting on the substance of her meetings with central American leaders and what policy issues were discussed with them.

It is all about "when are you going to the border?", but I think Harris is right in thinking that finding out why people are leaving the sending countries and what can be done to prevent them ever hitting the road might be a better approach.

Why are far more people leaving some countries and not others is a very legitimate question. Many people believe that the movement of peoples from El Salvador is still a consequence of the vicious civil war there in the Reagan years in which a popular political slogan in a Washington that supported the forces of repression was "El Salvador is Spanish for the new Vietnam."

Of course any fool knows that El Salvador really means "The Savior" which is a remarkable name for a country that is still waiting for a savior, but it doesn't look like it is going to be Ms. Harris, unless her Second Coming is a new revelation.

People denouncing Tijuana really do not know what they are talking about, because the city has changed remarkably for the better in the 40 years I’ve been going down there. Are most neighborhoods sh*tholes? Sure, just stay out of the bad parts, and if you go to the red light district (Zona Norte), bring some friends. Safety in numbers.

They have an outstanding gastronomic district, many craft breweries, and some of the best steaks and seafood I’ve ever had. Right now they’re selling condos overlooking the golf course that start at a million dollars USD, so there are some very nice parts of the city.

I use Tijuana as a base for launching domestic flights into the interior of Mexico for a fraction of the cost. A couple of weeks ago I got airfare for two and six nights in a very nice hotel for $538, a steal.

I’ve often parked on the street at the trolley station in Chula Vista and taken the trolley to San Ysidro and walked across the border, but leaving my car for a weekend in a sketchy neighborhood in Chula Vista isn’t great. The Mexican customs officials in San Ysidro are surly and corrupt and will try to get a $30 bribe from you when you enter by making you fill out an FMM form, then you watch them put the money in their pocket. I’m not crossing there anymore.

Most people, including Heels Up Harris, don’t know anything about Mexico.

The British saw our race riots and decided to show the world they could do better. So instead of a few English speaking sorta kinda Christian religion and Anglo legal human rights culture Jamaican bus drivers nurses and medical techs, Little England invited the natives of every former British colony in. Just think of an English heat wave (83 at noon) with beaches and parks filled with English and Jamaican women in sundresses and shorts and Paki women in full Burkas.. a few years later headscarves and ankle length skirts are part of the school uniform.

It is mostly (albeit not all) bullshit, of course.

People come here because (a) there are enough of their compatriots for them to feel comfortable, and (b) they can make a much better living.

Let’s suppose you’re living in the US and making $50,000 a year. If you could move to Canada and make $500,000, you’d at least think about it. I mean, there are Americans in Canada, and…

There really is a serious point here. Let some national community start coming and you’re for it. For example, about one out of every six Salvadoreans in the world is now here.

Well, there are only eight million Salvadoreans or so, so that’s tolerable. But there are, for example, three hundred million Nigerians. 1.2 billion Indians. What happens when they seriously start in? Why aren’t they going to come?

Open borders is obviously a recipe for national suicide. I can’t understand how people can seriously pretend not to see it.

The main problem is all the asians, africans, etc who are also coming up through there and just being let right the F in.

Indeed. For better or worse, Hispanics have already carved their niche. We know them, and they know us. I may not actually want more Guatemalans here — but I know what to expect, and so do they. Like one more goddamned cat, they’ll fit in.

Nigerians? Dot-Indians? I’m not sure — and I don’t want to find out.

Considering that Harris comes from California, it seems a bit odd that she has never been to the border. You can get the bus from Los Angeles and go to Tijuana for day trip.

She's from northern California. She's waiting for high-speed rail.

San Diego has a trolley line to the San Ysidro border crossing. The transit authority uses a German-style "honor system" on its trains (or at least it did when I visited in the '90s.) But the police always check the tickets on that segment.

They weren’t even there in 1995. I walked right in and saw nobody.

Apparently now the Mexicans are scared. Of (Alta) California.
