Amazon presses for in-person voting for unionization election in the midst of a pandemic
The e-commerce giant appealed a decision to hold mail-in balloting, arguing in part that the National Labor Relations Board pandemic election guidance never defined what an “outbreak” actually is.

Jan. 22, 2021 at 8:39 a.m. PSTSEATTLE — Amazon wants the upcoming unionization election at its Bessemer, Ala., warehouse to be held in-person, arguing against National Labor Relations Board guidance to hold mail-in balloting in the middle of the coronavirus pandemic.
The e-commerce giant late Thursday appealed the ruling by an NLRB hearing officer a week ago to allow roughly 6,000 workers to take seven weeks, starting Feb. 8, to cast their ballots by mail to be represented by the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. Amazon argued in one of two filings that the agency’s pandemic-voting policy is flawed, in part because it fails to define what a covid-19 “outbreak” actually is.
That guidance “reflected assumptions developed comparatively earlier in the pandemic — before scientific understanding of the virus and possible precautions had developed to where it is today,” Amazon says in the filing.

So the takeaway from the article is that Bezos is willing to endanger the lives of his workers in order to prevent them from unionizing. And this article is published in Bezos’ own newspaper.
For some reason I still struggle to hold these two ideas in my head at the same time:

Someone upthread brought up a Star Wars vehicle traveling a particular trade route "in less than twelve parsecs," which sounds like an error because a parsec is not a measurement of time (ie, this is not a proper analog to "less than twelve days"). But Star Wars is loose space fantasy and the faster vehicles regularly exploit hyperspace or faster than light hand-waving. If we were able to get as practical with Einsteinian physics as we have done with Newtonian, could hyperspace technology impose a multiplicity of distances possibly traveled (eg, as "felt" by the vehicle as evidenced in wear and fuel consumption), separate of the "actual" distance traveled? In other words, instead of a simple scientifically illiterate typo, could "less than twelve parsecs" actually be a relativity-literate competitive attribute?
I assume this is wrong and promise to never bring this up again.

An interesting sport event. An apparently promising rookie on the Celtics, Payton Pritchard, had been having a good season until a teammate, Jeylen Brown, did a dive and in the process, landed a lot of his body weight on the top of one of his kneecaps, apparently badly injuring him with Pritchard crying seemingly scared he has injured himself out of the season or NBA.

Even when these people are lying,which they do on any subject that challenges the orthodoxy, you can tell by the language that they are using that they know that they are lying.
That the courts refused to consider evidence for voter fraud is not evidence that there was no voter fraud.

Because it is, unfortunately, our primary means of “information.” But I choose to read it with extreme skepticism. Even after 63 years, I still do not consider myself expert at decoding it and extracting the occasional nuggets of truth wrapped up in the tapestries of disinformation and propaganda.
