It is difficult to overstate the significance of Charles Murray and Richard Herrnstein’s The Bell Curve to the thinking of pre-Alt Right White identitarians, specifically its section on the cognitive and behavioral differences between the races. The dominant mission of the movement then was propagating the forbidden truth of racial differences. When I first became aware of the scene in the mid-aughts, the general sense was that if we could just find a way to get people the truth, it might just blow-the-lid off the entire rotten establishment.

Of course, that day of racial reckoning never came. Perhaps the most obvious flaw in that way of thinking is that everybody already knows about racial differences, and aside from us and the far-Left who are always trying to censor us, nobody much cares. Sure, most people do not want to send their children to “bad schools,” and they know to avoid certain neighborhoods at night, but this kind of behavior has about as much political significance as the instinct to pull your hand away from a hot surface. I don’t want to exaggerate the pollyannaism of us then; pretty much all the ideas we talk about now were present then too (and the doom-posting was there too), but the emphasis was definitely different, and the idea that race realism (as we often called it then) would be our salvation was certainly the era’s most prominent meme.

Anyways, Murray has a new book called Facing Reality: Two Truths About Race in America (there are significant racial differences in (1) intellectual aptitude and (2) rates of violent criminality), and aside from a few people on our side and a couple leftist inquisitors, once again no one is going to care. In fact, this is not a book review, because I myself don’t care to read the damn thing.

I am not saying that HBD must serve a political end to be an interesting topic in its own right, but, c’mon, differences in intelligence and crime rates? We’ve all read this stuff a hundred times. Even HBD enthusiasts have moved on to earwax composition; get with the times Charlie. Even the title seems like an out-of-date reference to race realists.

Murray is the archetypal conservative of the leftist imagination who yearns for a past that never existed. His stated purpose in writing this book is to save America’s unique liberal individualist heritage from disintegrating into either a racial spoils system, or into racial Balkanization.

I am also aware of a paradox: I want America to return to the ideal of treating people as individuals, so I have to write a book that treats Americans as groups. But there’s no way around it. Those of us who want to defend the American creed have been unwilling to say openly that races have significant group differences. Since we have been unwilling to say that, we have been defenseless against claims that racism is to blame for unequal outcomes. What else could it be? We have been afraid to answer candidly.

The logical conclusion of the notion that all races’ abilities are inherently equal is that unequal racial outcomes must be the result of unequal treatment. More and more, this is the conclusion the Left is settling on, and that’s no good because that leads to thinking in terms of groups rather than individuals. Even more worrisome to Murray, it could provoke the last remaining suckers who still buy into the individualist myth, namely Whites, to start thinking of themselves as a group with interests.

Murray is quite right that leftist analysis of racial inequality in America gets the arrow of causation wrong, but the irony is that his own conception of the American creed has things equally backward. In Murray’s imagination, back in the good old days of his youth America was a liberal individualist nation that just happened to have a dominant White majority. In reality, it was a White nation that just happened to have liberal individualist beliefs. What made it a nation was the White part, not the liberal individualist part. Unlike many on our side, I am not anti-liberal individualism. Generally speaking, it is a decent way to run things. But that’s all it is, a way to run things. It is not a reason for being.

If you try to make it into a national reason-for-being, as America has, something else will swoop-in to fill-the-void. For most of American history, implicit White identity filled that void. When Murray was a youth, the implicitly White arrangement was beginning to come undone, and apparently he, as so many others of his vintage, interpreted this as us shedding our racist baggage to more perfectly embrace our liberal individualist identity. We were finally going to ‘live up to our founding ideals,’ and ‘judge a man not the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.’

And it’s not like that was all fake. Embarrassingly, people were genuinely motivated by these ideas. But at the end of the day, liberal individualism can never be an identity. It creates a void, and now that void is filled by anti-White identity. You could say that liberal individualism, as an end in itself, morphed into anti-White identity, but in practice, it’s the same difference. Behind the equity rhetoric, and the diversity-is-our-greatest-strength slogans, opposition to Whiteness is the legitimizing myth of the American state and its intelligentsia. And while a large share of the general public objects to the anti-White language of some of the more strident “antiracists,” anti-Whiteness has long established itself as the implicit normie consensus. This is why mainstream conservatives accept that it is perfectly fair for other races to defend themselves as races, but even when countering anti-White racism, they never dare defend themselves as Whites.

Conservatives might say I am missing the larger picture, that what we are really facing is an assault on the entire American and Western heritage, or it’s all about socialist big business taking away our freedoms. But no, anti-Whiteness is the larger picture. That is the regime’s reason-for-being. After all, conservatives are very willing to defend America and the West, they are quite comfortable defending Christianity, and they are equally at ease attacking socialism or woke business or woke socialist business. But they are absolutely terrified to defend Whites by name. Indeed, one of their primary modes of defending America or Western culture’s honor is to insist that those things nothing to do with Whites!

For sure, it is true that leftist pathologies extend beyond anti-White resentment. And obviously our politics is broader than demonization of Whitey. But that is sort of the point, the idea of defending, let alone celebrating, Whites as Whites is understood to be off-the-table. And that reflects the fact that the implicit consensus is anti-Whiteness. If the national story we tell ourselves is of the gradual extension of tolerance and equal opportunity to all, the bold-print subtext of that story is the overcoming of Whiteness. And in practical effect, White identity is made the negative moral center of that American story.

I am not arguing that the vast majority of Americans are actively anti-White. To use the Kendian language, most are non-White identitarians, not anti-White identitarians. Anti-Whiteness has not bewitched 95% of Americans, body and soul, by any means. Of course not. In fact, I have no doubt that a large share of conservative Whites, maybe a majority, would prefer America to be a predominantly White country, or a Christian country, or a White Christian country. But they have been trained that it is wrong to speak, or even consciously think, in those terms. Which says it all. Anti-Whiteness may not be an especially stable national identity—it is an inherently divisive project—but for the time being, that is its role.

It’s possible I am overstating the anti-Whiteness thing, maybe it is only the most prominent component of a more expensive left-wing project of resentment. But that is ultimately beside the point. The larger picture, remember, is that Murray’s beloved liberal individualism is not suited to be an end in itself. Something will fill the vacuum, whether it’s anti-Whiteness or whatever else, but liberal individualism does not make a nation. And whatever it is you think is filling that vacuum at the moment, at the very least we can agree that it is hostile to White identity.

The Bell Curve era of White nationalism was a failure because its strategy was only to hitch White nationalism to liberal individualism. Their argument was that White nationalism was a necessary evil because diversity gets in the way of a peaceful Last Man existence. Like Murray, they had things backwards; liberal individualism is the means, not the end. And by the mid-aughts, the end was opposition to White identity, and thus White-nationalism-as-a-means-to-liberal-individualism was doomed from the start.

I do not expect that Murray or the rest of mainstream conservatism to learn anything from their decades of abysmal failure. They will continue to shout of the virtues of colorblindness and the dangers of identity politics for as long as anyone will listen. But that also means that there will remain a vacuum on the Right, and it is our job to fill it.

  1. It’s the Jews. It is always the Jews. We cannot sugarcoat it, we cannot dance around it, we can not pretend it isn’t so. It’s the Jews. White, “off-white” (white middle eastern and white Latin), yellow, and brown people have the same enemy–the Jew. The Jew is a parasitic creature that takes on many forms, but always to the detriment of its surrounding environment and people. The Jews that don’t think like a Jew and break free from the Talmudic brainwashing are the ones that join humanity.

America’s problem is the Jew. White peoples problem is the Jew.

No, actually. Most people don’t know. That includes most politically-engaged normal conservatives.

It’s easy to lose sight of this when you’ve spent many years reading enormous amounts of dissident material. But most people don’t do that, and these things are never, ever discussed in mainstream forums. Any public figure who gets within even a couple of logical steps of the topic (like a sportscaster who suggests that maybe black people are naturally better at basketball) has his career destroyed.

It’s true that in their schooling and home purchase decisions, middle-class white people act as if they’re race realists. But they aren’t. To them, some school districts are better than others like the summer is hotter than the winter. It might as well be a fact of nature. To the extent that they think about it at all, they say vague things about “funding” or “culture” and quickly move on.

  3. But at the end of the day, liberal individualism can never be an identity.

Nor can epicanthic folds. But they are also an ineradicable feature of certain races.

But that is sort of the point, the idea of defending, let alone celebrating, Whites as Whites is understood to be off-the-table.

I have no problem defending my race– Anglo-Saxons– but other commenters get riled up when I do. Still, as John Derbyshire has said, only they can “do democracy”. Well, they and a few of their North Sea neighbors who are close cousins.

  5. There’s a difference between a truth and a lie, obviously. When the lie becomes defacto accepted as truth via mandate is when things go awry.

The legals system, specifically the laws themselves, have been used to mandate certain truths that are actually lies. Those not accepting these mandated illogical inconsistencies are punished by law. The beatings will continue until morale improves.

It is the law that attempts to corrupt the concepts of what’s right and wrong by simple declaring things as fact when they aren’t and the average person has no way to object. All the civil rights laws and racial and gender differences written into law are the attempt to reorient people’s thinking about how they view the world. Those with wrong think are punished and ostracized for their, by definition, wrong think, that definition being in the legal code.

It is the gov’t interference via the laws that has created the race and gender conflict in the country and they are attempting to use more laws to correct their mistakes that will inevitably create even more conflict.

I listened to it at 1.75 speed. I do the same to Alexander Mercouris of the Duran because these people can put you to sleep with their voice cadence.

He’s in the neighborhood on what’s going on. The entire Covid hysteria is manufactured and the dolts in the population have consumed the propaganda totally. Whether the virus is real or not doesn’t matter. Where it came from doesn’t matter, if it exists, and I have my doubts that it does exist but I have no proof either way.

The ‘authorities’ world wide have glommed on to this hoax for various reasons that differ from country to country. The US is central to the hoax because it needs to further the police state with the population’s full complicity. The hoax is the gov’t reaction if the virus is actually real. There’s no way, even if the virus is real, that the lockdowns and other measures are in any way helping. They are there to put the population into a state of total gov’t dependency; he’s right about that.

The bankers know their existing fiat system can’t survive. They need a new system that the booboisie can’t figure out, just like the couldn’t figure out the existing something from nothing currency scam. The pandemic was declared to produce the conditions needed to allow the oligarchy to function under the radar because people were too concerned with dying of a condition rare as hen’s teeth.

The political class in the US engineered the pandemic from the social engineering perspective. Lots of the really stupid governors, mayors, etc actually believe the bullshit they’re spreading because they’re stupid. Only a small cadre of people cooked this up and they purposely kept even their partners in crime ignorant of the real agenda precisely to allow them to be as sincere as possible with their fatwas.

One of my siblings got the jab. My parents, in their 90’s, didn’t. My other siblings didn’t and are militant and bull headed enough to never give in. I think it will take a few years for the medical fallout to become obvious to all, but by then lots of people are going to be in serious trouble.

If the ‘authorities’ start serious discrimination against those that won’t get the gene therapy vaccine, then at some point those people will resort to violence to voice their anger. They will be labeled terrorists but they’ll be right.

Still, as John Derbyshire has said, only they can “do democracy”. Well, they and a few of their North Sea neighbors who are close cousins.

And what has “democracy” brought them? The rise of democracy in Britain coincided with the rise of Jewish bankers and the decline of the monarchy. Jews gained control of the money supply and by the end of the Napoleonic wars they gained control of every lever of power, with the collective strength and ingenuity of the Anglo-Saxons at their disposal. They raped the world and their yid leaders reaped enormous profits while Britons at home languished in poverty and squalor.

And now? Their vaunted democracy has brought millions of savage and spiteful invaders into their home, and it is the so-called democratically elected leaders who not only cover for Paki rapists and African drug dealers, they actively jail native Britons who speak out against it. Those leaders and politicians who were duly elected (in the pure and righteous Anglo democracy you exalt) are the most enthusiastic participants in the genocide of the Anglo-Saxons and their offspring.

So tell me, what is so great about democracy the Anglo-Saxon way?

  11. Perhaps the most obvious flaw in that way of thinking is that everybody already knows about racial differences, and aside from us and the far-Left who are always trying to censor us, nobody much cares.

Overall a well written article but this simply isn’t true.

Most Whites that live outside of Black areas really do believe that race is superficial and unequal outcomes are environmental in origin.

Conservative Christians especially have a hard time with race and would prefer to think that God made all groups the same but Big Government Democrats cause division and inequality.

Liberal Whites that live in Black areas are more likely to be racial realists than White conservatives. They know the truth and would send us off to gulags if they could for not submitting to the lie. I had a liberal here admit that she would lock us up for the sake of progress and that yes they are lying. I have been in debates where liberals get confused because they aren’t sure about how much they are supposed to lie. It really is that bad. In open debate they have a hard time guessing as to how much they are supposed to deny.

I do not expect that Murray or the rest of mainstream conservatism to learn anything from their decades of abysmal failure. They will continue to shout of the virtues of colorblindness and the dangers of identity politics for as long as anyone will listen

They will shout the virtues of colorblindness while the left shouts at non-Whites that all inequality is caused by White racism. Guess who sounds more convincing to the aggrieved?

Charles Murray is really just a big waste of time. The left knows they are lying which he doesn’t seem to get. I also don’t buy that White Americans would embrace rugged individualism if they knew the truth. Rugged individualism assumes that at the worst everything is a pretty fair dice roll. It really isn’t.

  12. @Ralph B. Seymour

I am shocked, shocked I tell you, to learn that our trusted ‘authorities’ don’t obey the law. I’m certain it’s a mere oversight and Ms Whitmer will correct it immediately if not sooner.

Great piece that gets to the heart of the problem with the guys in Murray’s general dispositional vicinity, civic nationalist to race-realist (but not racist), libertarian to paleo-con (but still liberal, at least in the classic sense) – and even with HBD-adjacent liberals like Putnam.

They cannot accept what the data tells them – either in their work on in their own lives/the world they experience around them. They can accept that race is real to a certain extent, intellectually, but they’re morally hamstrung when it comes to doing anything important in meatspace to recognize that reality.

The reality is that legally-enforced apartheid/racial separation and ethno-nationalism are answers to the problems Murray, Putnam and all the rest have reported. That includes the separation of “Fellow Whites” from Whites – something guys like Murray, steeped in heavily Jewish academia, cannot bring themselves to accept.

They can’t accept those solutions because they’re “evil” in the modern Christian/WEIRD moral code that these guys can’t seem to shake.

But both intellectual atheists and Christians of only a century ago had no problems with being morally-confident racists – including anti-Semitism.

Our state of knowledge or morality is not better informed today such that we can call these men backward or ignorant. They may have had some details wrong but the policies were right and those societies were happier, stronger and more stable than what we have today.

  14. I appreciate it, Mr. Andrews, that you did not dismiss the point that “liberal individualism” as you or Mr. Murray call it* as being a non-factor. Many on the alt-right/dissident right/whatever do dismiss it. They like to point out Somalia, which is an land of anarchy filled with black people and then Sweden of the 1970s. (I’d pick America of the 1970s over Sweden n a heartbeat.) See Peak Stupidity‘s post “Sweden v Somalia”.

No doubt though, without smart altruistic White people (occasionally Oriental – see Japan) you won’t get any decent political system. If you import overwhelming numbers of people who aren’t that sort, can you really expect any help in building Liberal Individualism back up? Does Charles Murray mention immigration at all in any of his books? (I’ve read only one, Coming Apart a few years ago, and I don’t recall much about it in there.)

Thank you for making this point, Mr. Andrews. My observations tell me that it’s only been the last 5 years in which anti-whiteness has truly been the overwhelming ideology of our enemies.

    * I don’t know, cause I’m not planning on reading the book either.

Thank you, Bill. That was one of the best comments I’ve read from you ever. You are quite right that NEITHER the whole “who started it?!” discussion, with the competing Wuhan Lab Leak/It’s the bats/Unz Deep State conspiracy, NOR the increase in sickness and death of the older population for a year IS THE BIG STORY. Whether planned out carefully or just “not letting a crisis go to waste”, the Lyin’ Press and governments of all sorts whipped up and used this hysteria for a 2nd large ratcheting action of the Police State (with the first big one being 9/11 and Motherland Security).

I am glad you brought up the finance angle too. The elites that are in any way cognizant know that this house of cards that is the FED/Feral Gov’t monetary system will not stand for much longer.

The (((finance class))) is at the apex of this scam since finance owns the politicians, the media, academia, etc. I don’t know if they started the Covid nonsense, but I’m sure they instantly recognized it as THE tool to use to extricate themselves from the current failing currency system.

There are many player in the gov’t and corporate hierarchy that operate somewhat independently, but they can each see an opportunity and know which way the wind is blowing to catch a part of the breeze to help themselves. They’ll collude where necessary to further their own goals.

The CIA, for example, own the rat line for illicit drugs around the world and uses the funds for their black ops programs. The military keeps wars simmering for years so their buddies in the weapons industries get fat on the profits that the generals and other high level scum get a cut of upon retiring with nonsense appointments to boards of director or other make work entities. The politicians are brain dead but cunning whores that sniff out where the money is and work mostly for themselves and their campaign contributing benefactors.

When Covid came along they all viewed it from their perspective and implemented policies to benefit themselves and to make sure to keep the lie alive for as long as possible. The intel agencies cooked up stories on Trump to help the democrats. The democrats helped Big Pharma push the phony vaccine lie when they know damned well this is genetic engineering on the dolts in the population dumb enough to sign up as test animals. The Fed started the printing presses to flood the corporations with currency while legislatures shut down small business all over the country. Blackrock is buying up homes all over the place to rent it back to people later on. The blm and antifa drones burned down areas so whole blocks could be purchased by the moneyed interests in a real estate scam. etc. etc. etc.

The big players are all making a buck on this fiasco and the average Joe and Jane are going to take it in the shorts real soon. The controllers won’t get their CBDC fraud operational before some black swan event (China backing their shit currency with gold) craters their plans. It’s not far off in my estimation.

I think there’s something making people sick and causing fatalities. What that is I’m not sure of. I keep hearing various things about if THE virus has been positively identified and its ENTIRE genome sequenced. I understand that people have been working with fragments. I ask, fragments of what?

If someone claims a patent on this bug, then it has to be an engineered product because you can’t get a patent on nature, at least not one that will stand up to a claim against it.

THE virus is doing what they always do, it mutates. How a gene therapy, mislabeled a vaccine for legal reasons, can function against a moving target is something I wonder about. With all the world’s govt’s cooking the books on how to compile statistics, it’s one giant FUBAR.

It is pretty darn confusing. But I still think it’s all a fiction— just like the 19 hijickers were a fiction. Both are products of artifice and propaganda.

For example, we know statistically that the “virus” isn’t deadly. So how come some selected Iranians died of Covid? They probably didn’t die of Covid. The were probably just poisoned.

I think this is a clever psyop designed to induce the population to accept vaccines and the NWO agenda. It’s about control; the NWO criminals want to control EVERYTHING.

They can control the fake tests, the level of lies, and the propaganda. But I don’t think they would take the chance of losing control with worldwide introduction of a real deadly pathogen.

You could be correct. Others with differing views could be correct. The problem is the disinformation that’s flooding our collective consciousness and we don’t really know what’s true and what isn’t.

That’s why I think arguing over many things is pointless because they are minor nits and the larger issues are purposely off the official table. The single largest problem we face is the dictatorial nature of the last two years in particular and the last 20 years in general. We are now ruled by the whim of some asshat known as a mayor, governor or president by executive fatwa. Legislators largely no longer legislate, leaving the dictator in the administration to do as he/she pleases. Their only goal is to keep getting elected to further their career ambitions of being the most useless scum on the planet.

If one looks at what’s happened since 911 with a critical eye, one must conclude that there really is a plan afoot to introduce an even more sever form of feudalism than was evident pre 911. The financial interests are driving every decision for their benefit and people are arguing over the distractions, I among them, because I’m bored sitting around doing nothing because small business has been largely cancelled world wide.

Only the economic and monetary policies are really worth discussing since, I’m convinced, the entire goal from 911 forward was to loot the middle class to crush them into poverty by means they couldn’t properly identify via the inbuilt plausible deniability of all the recent weirdness. Trans issues, the virus, blacks with their violence becoming invisible under law, the talk and some action on reparation for people that were never slaves from people that were never slave owners, the rabid anti China and Russia nonsense, the Federal Reserve’s open and obvious debasement of the currency with the 1% yielding all the benefits, on and on.

The US economy is being purposely destroyed by the fiance types just like they did to companies they acquired to loot them for their resources and letting what remains rot. That’s where all this is heading – the crack up boom.

Right now, the controllers think they have a lock on future events. I’m of a different opinion. People don’t want to involve themselves in what they know will cause trouble because they have something to lose. Right now, more and more people are getting to the point they have nothing left to lose.

UBI and other helicopter money directly from the Fed Gov can placate people for a while, but sooner or later inflation will seriously eat into purchasing power and the sedative effects of free currency will wear off.

As the controller try to tighten the screws ever more, at some point things will rupture somewhere in the world and the dissatisfaction contagion will spread. Watch for more and more police ambushes as people take out their frustrations on the closest gov’t official they can find. Watch for more and more police quitting because they’re getting trashed from both the public as well as the system they work for. As policing problems become a greater and greater story every day is when you know that criticality is near.
